Isn’t it incredible the way we women chase after the latest trend in beauty and fashion, searching for the next best thing to make us look and feel wonderful.
As an 80’s baby, I always look back at my makeup inspiration – my mother, and reminisce on her bright magenta lipstick and remember how content she was with wearing that shade up into the 90’s when she stopped wearing makeup altogether.
I absolutely love lipstick, so for me to think about wearing one shade and sticking to it for a decade seems like an unnecessary doom!
It wasn’t until yesterday, when I had the pleasure of bumping into Soul legend Sade Adu in Mayfair’s Gucci, that I realised that a signature makeup look is the trademark of confidence and class. I was just so happy to have met her again after living near her as a young girl in the mid 90’s. She was just as down to earth and wholesome as she used to be. I recognised her instantly, because she still looks as beautiful as she did when she was 30.
Sade is an absolute legend. I first came to know her music when I was 7 years old; at the time my father was in love with her and played her album ‘Diamond Life’ at every occasion.
Her simple black eyeliner and scarlet red lipstick was her staple beauty regime, which would last for over 25 years. Not only does this exude confidence in ones own style, it defies the craves of inadequacy.
At the prime age of 51, Sade is back this month with her 6tth album ‘ Soldier of Love’ which is indeed her first single, a powerful hip hop – rock anthem of survival and loyalty.
I was delighted to see that even now, she has not traded in her makeup look, and has gone slightly darker with the lipstick shade, a blackberry hue for the album artwork.
If you want to have a go at re-creating Sade’s signature look, you need:
1)a gel black liner from Shu Uemera £15
2)Rimmel Mascara GLAM EYES black £7
3)a pair of tweezers from The Body Shop £8
4)a scarlet lipstick from Giorgio Armani in Lip wax compact shade Sienna £21
See if you can set a trend and stick to it for more than a decade so the next generation of beauties can follow in your footsteps.
