THE REAL X FACTOR. TALENT...NOT HYPE!

The way the music industry and especially singing talent is shown in the media is to be successful you have to be a contestant on X-factor or Britain’s Got talent or supported by a global music company and marketed to the hill, to even be regarded as a talented individual, why Cheryl Cole is a pop star is anyone’s guess.

Well there is another world out there of talented musical individuals and more and more are coming onto the web to display their talents, gladly as I am sick of these 70’s style variety shows with robotic cloned acts, who are so safe personality wise and completely boring.

THE IRAQ INQUIRY: A NECESSARY CHARADE?

Tony Blair’s not really having a good time at the moment. Only last week he found out that he would not be bestowed with the honour of becoming the first EU president, instead that was gifted to a Belgian, no not Jean Claude Van Damme, someone much less well-known: Herman van Rompuy. Exactly. So Tony’s lost out there. His other problem however might not be so much of a direct problem, more of a reputation killer maybe, an embarrassment, a pulling of skeletons out of a huge cupboard, yes; it’s the enquiry into the war in Iraq.

INSPIRATION: CROSS DRESS, FANCY DRESS...DRESS UP!

What is fashion?

Fashion; 1. The current popular custom or style, especially in dress. 2. A manner of doing something. – v.t. to form or make (into) Oxford Reference Dictionary

Fashion is not only about following trends, but also about making them.
In the new issue of Arena HOMME + (winter/spring 09/10) I was amazed to find such a rich and insightful way of looking at fashion. The way the magazine has featured men’s fashion is groundbreaking.

NEW COLOUR: FASHION TREND

It’s a great Autumn/Winter look to inject some vibrancy into your wardrobe and what better way to do it than with new colour trends.

Team your bright, vibrant, clashing colours with a neutral bottom half to accentuate the colour and to not overdo the bright injection of colour. If you don’t feel you can pull off a complete brightly coloured top half then just use your accessories to add a splash of colour to your outfit, the perfect way to break yourself in!

Team similar colours together, the berry colours work excellent together so team purples and violets, with softer pink hues and work the autumnal look to perfection.

Inject colour into your outerwear to dress up a more neutral look.

HAIR CARE- CONDITIONERS

I'm not going to harp on about how cold it is, you know that it's winter and that our face's need extra moisturiser and body needs wrapping up with knited garments.
But how about your head?

Conditioner is just like face tonic water- people know it exists but do not always use it!

For me, conditioner is essential to a good head of hair.

My hair is natural, so this means that I have no weave or relaxer attached to my hair. I have dyed hair and because of this, the natural oils in my hair are eaten up quicker by the Chemicals in the dye, thus, making my hair thirsty for nutrients.
My first piece of advice is to condition the hair for hours before you wash it. I know this is not always achievable (as we have busy lives) but i would recommend it at least every 10 days.

Do a hot oil treatment- I reccomend John Freda's, especially for frizzy hair. Leave this on for 30minutes to an hour for optimum results.

Spikes Top 3 Hair Conditioners are:

- Tigi Rockaholic, living the dream conditioner £19.95p

- Aveda, Be curly Conditioner £14.70p

- Redken Extended Conditioner £12.35p

If you do not mind abit of mess and feel experimental, make your own hair conditioner.
Ingredients: Tree Tea Oil, Warm Olive Oil and Avocado Pear.

Mix these ingredients altogether in a plastic bowl with a spatula.
Massage through the scalp to the end of the hair shaft
If your hair is long enough, wrap your hair into a bun and leave a shower cap on for 1 hr.

The natural heat your temples will create a light hair steam.
The results are: lustrous healthy full bodied hair!

Enjoy!

FASHION PROFILE: BURBERRY

Recently in Larvik, Norway, artist Jens Werner painted his house in the famous check print. While this example highlights the past associations of the brand with chavs and Japanese tourists; it's about that time we should take a second look at the British fashion giant.

The story of Burberry started in 1856, in Basingstoke, by Thomas Burberry, a 21-year-old draper’s apprentice. Since then, the commitment to quality and innovation in fabric and outerwear design has led to its status today.

  LASH DOWN!

Everyone concentrates on the top lashes for a several reasons.
The main one for me is that I hate the heroin chic smudged concealer look. It adds to bags under the eye and makes you look dirty!
And secondly, the fear of poking yourself in the eye with a mascara wand is enough to put any simpleton off.
Fear no more, I have a great glamorous solution, that will take a certain amount of sophistication and self trust.

UNCLE J’s  COMBAT CORNER - Pt.3

Before the huge showdown between pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao and welterweight warrior Miguel Cotto on 14th of November 2009, I predicted that Manny’s speed will be way too much for Cotto, which was the case. What I didn’t expect was for the fight to bean execution, in which Cotto would be the helpless victim.

On the night Manny didn’t just defeat Cotto, he destroyed him. The Filipino warrior was the superior fighter in every conceivable way.

KNIT KNIT HOORAY!

Its the time of the year to wrap up warm and cosy, and this seasons hottest knitwear is the way to do it!
This trend has seen patterns and stitching which have been influenced by Peruvians and Eskimo prints, so if you threw out Granny’s knitted cardi last year you might be kicking yourself now!
Adorned on the Autumn/Winter catwalks the knitwear trend includes chunky knit cardies, oversized or fitted, luxurious fur and knitted jumpers, as well as furry, cosy jumper dresses, and chunky knitted tights. Knitwear is fab! And accessories have encapsulated the knitwear trend beautifully as well.
With gorgeous soft chunky snoods, and oversized berets, no one ever looked this good during winter! So accessorise your red nose with something soft and invest in a snood or a pair of funky earmuffs!
Who knew looking good and keeping warm went together so well!

UNLIKELY CHUMS? LEE AND BARACK

Barak Obama has recently stated he wants to see a change in policy from North Korea echoing the feelings of much of the global community that enough is enough. North Korea is the world’s last remaining communist dictatorship and is the only modern state to abide solely by hard-line Stalinist values.

FILM NOIR BLACK LIPSTICK TREND 2010

Increasingly, fashion and beauty keep taking a U-turn and emulating lost trends of past, reviving them with current edge and a heritage of new school advances.
I keep finding myself reaching for my black eye liner and applying it onto my LIPS! I then stumbled across a brilliant cheap one in a 99p store in Muswell Hill and was shrieking with delight to the sales assistance, who clearly didn’t understand my enthusiasm. The Halloween section catered for my trend fix!

MUST HAVE...SUNGLASSES!
(Yes, I know it's winter!)

Put on some Xavier Cugat and get into a tropical mode!
It is autumn, the cold in the air is a reminder of winter being just around the corner, if not upon us already. The last thing that should be coming to mind is sunglasses.
And for that exact reason it is a must have. But not just any pair of sunglasses.

ONLINE GAMING: THE FUTURE OF MANKIND?

Even if you’re not a fan of computer games, you cannot have failed to notice the rise and rise of online gaming. The last few days saw the launch of the biggest selling game of all time: Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, a fast paced shoot-em-up where you play the role of a US Marine and an SAS Special Forces op and go around the world shooting anything that moves. If you were anywhere near Leicester Square around midnight on the 10th November you would have thought a film premier was going on but for the large amount of teenage and young adult men going crazy and foaming at the mouth rather than young rabid females.

KNOCKOUT PRINTS: DARE YOU?

Daring prints are everywhere this season, and they are the perfect way to add a splash of colour to your dreary winter day.
Jungle and African inspired prints look beautiful in detailed tunics and dresses, team these with black tights and black patent heels, with subtle black accessories  but don’t overdo the jewellery or you may risk overdoing the look.

UNCLE J’s   COMBAT CORNER no.2

Last week I predicted that the only way David Haye would leave Germany as a  heavy weight champion, on Saturday the 7th of November 2009, was by knocking out 7ft 2” and  twenty three stone Valuev.

David didn’t knock the giant out, but the British born fighter did rock the Russian in the 12th round (which had never been done), that combined with the fact David won a minimum of 8 rounds guaranteed Haye’s victory, and the opening of a new chapter in heavy weight boxing as we know it.

No your eyes are not deceiving you, although if you are a serious fashion fiend you will already know that the 2 major fashion players, one high street and one designer, that are, Jimmy Choo and H&M are to join forces. From the 14 November you will be able to nab something from the Choo-Hennes collection from a range starting at £14.99- £179.99, let’s face it hardly bank breaking stuff is it?!
